Chapter Six

Seb

The door opens and in walks Simon. However, it isn't Simon I’m now looking at but the woman standing behind him with what looks like a cage encasing her head. I hear Pa gasp beside me, and I feel him stiffen. It takes a few moments to recognise the person within the contraption. It’s Elisia. I look into her eyes, and I see unshed tears. There’s saliva running down her chin. It seems her tongue is trapped underneath something in her mouth.

“What is the meaning of this?” Pa asks. I can hear the confusion in his voice, and as I turn to look at him, I also see anger starting to show on his face.

“I’m trying to teach my daughter here that she should be seen and not heard. Over the last few years her sassy mouth has been running away with her. She never listens. Therefore, to make sure she obeys tonight, I have ensured she can’t speak.”

My pa turns to me, but I don’t honestly know what to say. A look passes between us. If Simon can treat his daughter like this, then Pa now knows one hundred percent that everything I said about the way the girls here are being treated is true. My pa looks sad. He glances over to Simon with confusion on his face.

“What the hell has gotten into you, Simon? You can’t be serious. She’s your daughter. Is this what you wanted to show us? Is this what you think will make the girls ready for their new life? It isn’t happening. I won’t allow you to treat the girls we get like this. We’re not complete monsters. Yes, I know what we do isn’t legal, and I know what we do isn’t morally right. However, they’re not toys. The men we sell the girls to don’t want them coming to them beaten and abused.” I can see my pa getting angrier as he speaks.

All of a sudden, Simon pulls Elisia in front of him by her arm and she stumbles. I hear her whimper but it sounds strange due to her tongue being depressed in her mouth. More saliva starts to run down her chin. I want to run to her when I see the fear in her eyes, and her tears start to flow.

“Jez, do you want your son to have a woman who argues about everything he says and does? This one here has more attitude than any of the girls we’ve ever taken. She’s slowly learning who’s in charge, though. She answers back less and less each day. She’ll be the perfect wife for Seb soon.” Simon seems pleased with himself. As though what he’s doing is something commendable.

“I want my son to have a wife who loves him. Who understands who he is and what responsibilities he’ll have when he takes over the business. That’s why I agreed that these two would marry. I’d hoped they’d be able to spend time together and learn to love each other.
